A hard frost the last couple of days – and misty mornings as the sun comes up and moisture rises off the warming ground.

Sunrise, shot slightly earlier than in previous pictures, and with the sky still quite a deep shade of blue.

Our first true night shot of the year. Street lamps in the foreground echo those mapping out the town in the distance.

Tonight the clouds departed as sunset approached – so here’s a striking image of a winter sunset in a clear sky.

It’s common to see birds gathering on TV aerials as the afternoon draws to a close. Sometimes we even get a flock of starlings swooping about as dusk falls. Not quite a full-scale murmuration – but, who knows, we might get one of those some day.

These windblown sunset clouds reminded me of nothing so much as the turbulent bands that make up the atmosphere of the planet Jupiter.

Sunny for most of the day – almost springlike – but a few clouds rolled up to give us an impressive sunset. Later these gold-bronze and grey tints turned to deep pink and inky blue.

This captures the moment this morning when the cloud started to lift after a spell of rain. A few minutes later the sky was blue and full of little fluffy, innocuous clouds.

Filthy weather today – rain and high winds. The picture above was taken amid a brief spell of sleet. However, the afternoon brought blue skies and the evening an excellent view of Jupiter as it sat abreast the moon.

Today could not have been more of a contrast with yesterday – cloudless blue skies for most of the day, enough cloud by the afternoon for an impressive sunset then a clear sky during the evening offering a lovely view of the moon and nearby Jupiter.

Introducing The Skylight Project
January 1st, 2012 · Comments Off · Skylight Project 2012
During each day of 2011 this blog featured an image taken on (or around – if we’re being transparently honest here) that day. This is a project that I want to continue into 2012, because I found I enjoyed doing it very much. But I’m introducing a few refinements for this year.
